Rationale

My Brand is Kappa-Sushi an originally Japanese sushi restaurant that has now become global. The word Kappa translates in sea monster in English. I chose to make my character a samurai having just slain a sea monster and turned the monster into sushi. I chose a samurai because of the traditional Japanese associations with the samurai, I also feel that a samurai implies precision and skill to a craft which is a value kappa-sushi are very much trying to achieve. The sea monster I chose for the obvious brand name connection and it helps illustrate the samurai's ability as a strong warrior. I drew my final design in a very gestural and cartoonish fashion to mimic traditional Japanese water paintings, I also used very vivid colours to help strengthen this idea and make the mascot a bit friendlier.

Mascot

I've decided I want to make my mascot a Japanese samurai chef, I feel like it fits well with the brand and illustrates the precision and skill needed to make kappa sushi quality sushi. I also want to play around with the sea monster and perhaps make an enemy of the samurai and then eventual sushi when it's defeated.
